Filter Guide & Common Mistakes

How to Measure Your Filter

Pull out the old filter and check the printed size on the frame. It will read something like "16x25x1". That means 16 inches long, 25 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. If the label is faded, use a tape measure on the filter itself. Do not measure the housing opening. The filter and housing are rarely the same size.

Understanding MERV Ratings

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. MERV 8 works for basic dust. MERV 11 adds pollen and mold spores. MERV 13 captures bacteria and smoke. But going too high can restrict airflow in a system not built for it. Check your HVAC manual. Most residential systems handle MERV 8-11 without issues.

Why Oversized Filters Cause Problems

A filter that is too thick or too dense forces your system to work harder. This raises energy bills and can damage the blower motor over time. A filter that is too small lets unfiltered air bypass through gaps. Always match the exact size and recommended MERV rating for your unit.

When to Replace Early

The standard interval is a starting point. Replace sooner if you have pets, live near construction, run your system constantly, or have family members with allergies or asthma. A good rule: check monthly and replace when you can no longer see light through the filter.

Keeping a Maintenance Log

When selling a home, buyers and inspectors look for proof of regular maintenance. Use the Print Log feature to generate a record of every filter change. This shows you cared for the home's systems and can support your asking price.

Buying Filters in Bulk

Multi-packs from hardware stores or online retailers cost 20-40% less per filter. Buy a 6-month or year's supply at once. Just store them flat in a dry place so the media does not warp before use.

About This Project

FilterTrack exists because most homes have at least four appliances with replaceable filters, and almost nobody keeps track of all of them. The HVAC filter gets changed on a schedule, then the water filter runs six months past due, and the air purifier starts making noise because nobody remembered the pre-filter.

This dashboard puts every filter in one place. Add your appliances, set the intervals, and see what is coming up. Mark changes as done and the schedule adjusts. Estimate what you spend per year. Print a log for your records.
